D.A.S.H. - Disability Awareness Starts Here

On Monday we started to prepare to have visitors from D.A.S.H. (Disability Awareness Starts Here) join us this week! In second grade, the D.A.S.H. program focuses on blindness, and I kicked off our D.A.S.H. year by teaching the children all about the inner workings of our eye. We also discussed the life of Helen Keller and all the challenges and obstacles she overcame in her life.
 


We took a walk around the school and searched for braille in the world around us. Students had the opportunity to use split peas and spell out their name in braille.

On Tuesday we welcomed parent volunteers in for D.A.S.H. where students were blindfolded and got to experience a guided walk, cane walk, and visiting a restaurant. Ask your child how they felt to lose their sense of sight for a short time. Check out pictures from this experience:
